how we train
Short track speed skating is a physically demanding sport that requires great strength, flexibility and physical fitness. While top skaters make it look easy, they need to do a lot of training to perform at their peak.
The following short videos were taken at the National Development Camp. We were lucky enough to have 2 top level Korean coaches train us and they brought along some of their best young skaters.

On Ice
Pushing in the Straight
Novice skaters need to learn to glide in a straight line on both skates. They can then progress to transferring their weight, building pressure through their push. They should always keep their shoulders square. |
Single Leg Squats
Novice skaters can use the barrier to assist. They need to keep their left hip pressed towards the wall. Left foot squats are done in the cross-over position. |
Core Drills - Advanced Skaters
Single leg squats in the corner; single leg slalom; bounce step high to low |
Powerpushing
Shoulders always remain flat, all weight transferral occurs through the hips. Advanced skaters can practise this drill in the reverse direction. |
Inside and Outside Overtaking
Skaters need to set up their pass, skating a different line to the person they are passing. |
Off Ice
Split Step
Ensure that the hip leads the step, shoulder, knee and hip in line. |
Low Walking Triple Step
Full extension of the push, ensuring that the weight is over the hip. Knee tucked in close to the ankle. |
Skating Skip
Maintaining a low position, keeping the toes pointed upwards. Weight transferral occurs through the hips. Keep your shoulders steady. |
